Hartley is a suite-style dorm, creating a very communal atmosphere. If you are lucky, your suite-mates will be great and can even become lasting friends. However, there is also the possibility of having inconsiderate neighbors that can definitely mar your experience here. Having experience with both, I would still recommend this dorm for those who are looking to have the option of a more community focused dorm. It is not a party dorm by any means, but you are much more likely to encounter and get to know your suite-mates compared to a hall-style dorm. The common areas are generally kept pretty clean and are as comfortable as one can expect for an undergraduate dorm. Staff are generally friendly and helpful, so long as you approach them with kindness and due respect. The major downfall of this building are the bathrooms. Each suite has communal bathrooms, with toilet and shower stalls. The showers are prone to flooding and the toilets are very loud if you have a room nearby. Again, facilities did well in terms of staying on top of bathroom cleanliness but maintenance was lacking. For the entire first semester I lived in Hartley, one of the showers did not have a working light. Despite numerous reports, it was not fixed until winter break. In all fairness, they were quick to act regarding “emergencies” such as clogged toilets.
