Sutherland Hall West Dorm Reviews at PITT

Sutherland Hall is an extremely nice dorm for one's freshman year. It has a dining hall connected, large dorms, and nice bathrooms that are not communal. The only con is the hill it sits on that one must walk up to get there, but it is not terrible.

Sutherland hall was pretty nice but it's starting to show it's age. Having private bathrooms for each suite is a perk but you are responsible for cleaning them. I wish it weren't on top of the hill, since I rarely left my dorm because of the hill and COVID. Having a dining hall in the building was nice and all the employees are friendly. I never got to experience the common areas as they were closed or people I didn't know were in them.

Sutherland hall was great because the perch (dining hall) was better quality food and it was generally quite. I feel like I missed out on being closer to lower campus where every one else was and it is just harder to make friends at sutherland. The walk also sucks when it rained or snowed and you had to go to class.

Living in Sutherland, I sometimes felt isolated because most of the university buildings and library are on lower campus. However, because we were isolated on upper campus it forced us (those who lived in Sutherland) to group together and become a small family away from home. I am beyond thankful for living in this dorm because the strong friendships I made living here have made me a better person and those people I met while living in Sutherland Hall - West are now like family.

Sutherland Hall is on a hill so it tends to be on the quieter side, which I prefer. It does take some time to get to main campus, which is a downside, but it wasn't too bad so far. The private bathrooms and the in-building dining hall are also really nice/convenient.

I like living in Sutherland. It's super quiet so it's great for studying. The common spaces are really nice, but we didn't get to use them much because of covid, there are two lounges per floor, and a kitchen on the first floor as well as a game room. Having the perch in our building is convenient, but the market is the real MVP. The bathrooms are semi-private (you share with the room next door). Everything about the building itself is great, if we could pick it up and move it to Forbes it would be perfect. It's definitely a hike to walk up to Sutherland from lower campus where everything else is (most classes, restaurants, other dorms etc.). But the shuttle is a life saver if you don't want to trek cardiac hill.

I was part of a six-person one bathroom suite. I had really great roommates, which really helped, but I also really liked the room layout and the fact that I had a semiprivate bathroom that was only for my suite mates and I. Sutherland also has a dining hall as well as a convenience store on the first floor along with a tv room and a computer lab, so it's very well accommodated. The only hinderance to Sutherland is its location, since it is on upper campus.
