Guild-Memorial Hall Dorm Reviews at Valpo

Guild hall is a good place to live, however the layout is very strange. The hallways and the architecture of the building are complicated and confusing at first. I love the study rooms but there are not many places besides those rooms and a few common areas to study or hang out in. The kitchen areas are nice though. The rooms are decent size, but the age of the building is very evident.

Overall, GM was an amazing dorm to live. I have only two negatives. The first one being that my neighbors could a little too loud at night but this was an easy fix. I politely knocked on their door and explained the situation. They understand and we had no issues after that. The bathrooms (especially the toilet area) was another negative. It would be cleaned nearly everyday but somehow would be dirty at the end of the day. Regardless of the negatives, it was very close to my classes, many of my friends lived in GM, RAs were very nice, hardly any issues with my dorm room, etc. If I had any issues, the repair person would come quickly. I honestly loved the GM dorm hall.

Guild-Memorial is a beautiful building. The rooms are much more spacious than freshman dorms and the staff and community create a safe environment in the dorm. There is a lot of storage space in my room (a quad), however for some reason the room is built for 3 instead of 4 people (3 vanities, 3 closets). There is a dresser and wardrobe in the room as well but the inconvenience of someone not having a closet or vanity in the room would pleasant.

So far I've been pleased with my stay in GM. Its typically quiet and clean and if something needs to be cleaned better or more often, it's super easy to contact RAs and to fix the problem. Rooms are a good size as well.

The hall itself is nice, with a beautiful courtyard in the center. However, there are two main problems I have with the dorm. The first problem I have is the thermostat. There is a dial on the wall in the room to adjust how hot or cold the air is, yet the air temperature seems arbitrary instead of based on the dial's setting. For example, the dial can be cranked up to hot but the room will still feel cold and the vent will be blasting out cold air. The other problem I have with the dorm is the bathroom maintenance. The stalls are mostly clean, but the showers are poorly maintained. Of the three showers in my wing's bathroom, one has poor water pressure and another blasts out either freezing or scalding water, leaving my entire wing to primarily rely on one shower.

The oldest dorm on campus is well-kept and has stunning stained glass windows in the common rooms. A great dorm for sophomore and junior students, this dorm gives the classic dorm experience to those looking to spend time with their friends and peers in a living environment.

The architecture of the building is beautiful, but the building is old and has some outdated features. The courtyard and the stained glass windows are the best features of the building! I wish there was a laundry room on both sides of the building.

The rooms are big enough and the lounges are good for hanging out with friends to watch TV or cook. The RA's are generally nice, and the bathrooms are clean. In the community fridge, there is generally enough space and if you label your food no one generally takes any of it.
