It is very old. Not that it is a bad thing to have age, it just is an interesting experience. Going to a military college you have to get used to the no-privacy. It can be loud at times, but you feel closer to your friends cause you can constantly see them. Another weird thing, once you step foot outside your room, you're literally outside. Hence why it is traditional barracks living associated with that of the civil war era infrastructure.

Living in Barracks is definitely something you must experience to understand. The loud noises and bugs crawling around the room is part of it and the AC not working during the summer is terrible. But the school wouldn't be the same without all of those things. It is truly an experience worth while.

Certainly not like a dorm at a normal college, everything is very communal and there are 4-7 people in a room. It definitely brings people together though. It's pretty geared to having people visit each other's rooms and hanging out.

Barracks... If you know anything about VMI then you know that barracks is the place that everyone that goes to VMI lives. There is 5 floors that we call stoops, and you live on each floors with the people in your grade. The cleanliness of barracks relies on the morale of the corps pretty much. there's three barracks: old, new and 3rd. Once you're not a rat you can choose your roommates.
