Thurston Hall Dorm Reviews at GWU

Thurston, because of its recent remodeling, is very nice. Because it is a freshman dorm, there are some things that are kind of not so nice. The communal bathrooms are left a mess very often, and it is usually pretty loud. But overall, it hasn't been a horrible experience, and I have met a lot of cool people in the hall.

Common areas were a great study choice, since the library was further away. It was very convenient to have a dining hall and kitchens too. The hall was kept clean through daily cleaning, with the exception of weekends, where it could get messy since there were no cleaning services. The location was two blocks from the white house, which made it easy to go study near national monuments when we wanted some fresh air. The experience was unforgettable and one of a kind. The community could have been better through more events in the hall, but overall I loved Thurston hall!

While the redone hall appears nice at first glance, once you have to live with over 1000 kids you quickly realize why the hall has its reputation. Most nights I could not sleep with all the screaming, even during weeknights and finals week. Many kids don't have much to deal with in their first year of school so screaming seems to be a good replacement for homework. Unless you are fine with the yelling or are one of the yellers, do not live here.

Thurston Hall is always a healthy and safe environment. There are never any noise complaints and everyone cleans up after themselves al of the time. The bathrooms and well kept because they are cleaned multiple times a day.

The location and size of Thurston are nice, but my room had mold very frequently and we specifically had to request a fan put into our bathroom so that more mold would not develop. The walls are pretty thin, and so the noise can be a bit much sometimes.

Thurston is a great freshman residence hall for those living on the Foggy Bottom campus. As an engineering student I elected to live on the engineering student floor which was helpful for studying and working on projects with classmates. It is definitely a large and loud building, so keep that in mind if you live there.

Thurston Hall was a very old building and extremely dirty. The elevators took a long time to function so most of the times I ended up taking the stairs. I wasn't satisfied considering how much I paid.
