Vander Poel is a reasonably nice dorm at Hofstra University. It offers a wide selection of room styles; for instance, singles, doubles, and quads. The rooms are tiny for their price but are livable. The bathrooms and common spaces are cleaned daily and the staff are phenomenal. Additionally, the RAs are extremely friendly and eager to help.
The noise level in Vander Poel has heavy room for improvement. Despite the students in the dorm being quiet, their movements can be loud. The walls and floors are thin so you can hear people next to and above you. Depending on room location, you can hear the elevator/people waiting for it, or the bathroom/people in it.
The common space is an entire floor. It is divided into 4 sections with walls and glass doors. There are 2 study sections, stocked with whiteboards and tables. There is a social section with a large tv, sofas, and board games. Finally, there is a kitchen that comes with 4 stoves, 2 sinks, 2 vending machines, and cooking supplies. Many students come and go throughout the day. At night, there are a lot of students that meet with friends or do work; making it a welcoming environment.
I love the views Vander Poel offers with one side having a view of the NYC skyline.
